Plasma Transferred Arc (PTAW) or Equipos de Soldadura de Plasma is an advanced thermal surfacing process that deposits wear and corrosion-resistant layers onto raw metallic substrates. Unlike typical Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), the plasma arc is highly constricted through a refined copper nozzle, producing an extremely dense, focused energy column. This column reaches thermal thresholds exceeding 15,000°C.
During operation, metal alloy powder (commonly Cobalt-based Stellite, Nickel-based Colmonoy, or Tungsten Carbide composites) is injected coaxially or laterally into the arc. This creates a highly localized weld pool with the base material. The resulting deposit exhibits a metallurgical bond that is drastically superior to thermal spray technologies.
In surface cladding, the *dilution rate*—the percentage of base metal that melts and blends into the deposited alloy layer—defines the ultimate performance of the coating. High dilution contaminates the deposit, diminishing its wear-resistant properties. PTA cladding reduces this rate to a remarkable 5%–10% in a single pass, compared to 20%–30% in standard arc welding. This allows engineers to achieve the exact metallurgical characteristics required of the alloy without needing multiple overlay passes.
